The George Washington Carver of Milwaukee
A giant of the health care profession joined the Ancestors this month. Dr. Lester Carter has served the Milwaukee community since arriving in 1968. He, like many black pharmacists, was the only source of medical care for African Americans well into the 20th century. When black people were not welcome at hospitals and there were few physicians who were willing to treat black people, black pharmacists were our source of professional advice. Dr. Carter has distinguished himself by studying many natural treatments including the use of food and supplements as a means to bring about healing. He was a person the youth of the community could visit at his drugstore and have a conversation about the importance of health. Few of their drugstores exist today but we would like to remember and celebrate those who have been there for us when no one else would help.
The Sankofa Council of Milwaukee welcome guests, Dr. Alicia Walker and Dr. Sirr Grice who have followed in the noble profession.
