From slavery to the present, the Black Church and Black Fraternal groups has served as a cornerstone of African American life and culture. It was the foundation of African American community life. Is this the case today or has the Black Church gone to its interment? Is Jesus message to Lazarus relevant for the Black Church.
The Black Church is a critical institution for African Americans. It became the first institution in the United States wholly controlled by blacks, and the major vehicle used in their struggle for black liberation. For more than 150 years it has remained free of white control.
