TRANSFORMING RACIAL DISPARITIES, PART 3: CRIMINAL JUSTICE
At a time when crime rates were going down, incarceration rates were going sky-high in the U.S. Incarceration has increased 500% within the last 40 years. Research indicates that all people, Black and White, are committing crimes at the same rate, however, Black people are over-represented in the Criminal Justice System at an alarming rate. Wisconsin imprisons one in every 36 Black adults, which is 12 times the rate of white incarceration. As a system of wires designed to capture the caged bird, such as the systemic and structural racism which deprives Black people of their freedom and liberty. From a distance, the cage appears as one structure. A closer examination finds that each wire is constructed and designed with a particular purpose and effect, and is coordinated like the Criminal Justice System.
